I'll hunt down the alternative drivers that are fixed to 48 KHz and offer low latency down to 5 milliseconds.

and a decent ASIO soundcard will do the job. I personally didn't have much luck with the (ancient) version of VST I had before, but that was probably due to the previous soundcard. I know at least one person who uses a version of VST32 in real time.
