I actually just reada couple of reviews and both of them say 'Nice and gory but lacking any depth. Violent for violence's sake. Might skip it and rent Shurayuki Hime again :)

True for the sequelBut the first film really is an incredibly good film. Yes there's lots of violence and the absolutely fantastic thing where they count down the deaths but it is a more in depth film than that. They do actually explore some of the characters and do a good job of getting across the impressive nastiness of the whole situation.
And 'Beat' Takeshi has one of the most odd death scenes ever committed to film.
Like I said - Watch the first one, it's great!
