# funny you should say that
Me and my section actually watched the slaughter on the road to Bashra..And it wasn't pretty, however the english didnt get involved, it was the yanks who did the killing there. But war is simple - kill them before they kill you.

# I thought it more a case of
Establishing your objective by the quickest and least bloodiest route possible. If you can defeat an army without a single bullet being fired isn't that better than blowing up everybody and counting the casualties afterwards?

# no
war takes over when politics fails. You dont win a war by skirting around your enemy. You face them head on and move through them.

# Then you are nothing but pawns
your life isn't in your hands anymore it belongs to the generals and the politicians (because even politicians like to play wargames look at Bush & Blair).

# And?
I know nobody will probably read this as I am skipping back through the archives but never mind.

Of course soldiers are pawns. If you join the army you accept that you have to do what is commanded by the generals and, ultimately, the politicians. If that is something you find greatly distasteful then you shouldn't be in the army (I presume you are not anyway.)

In a war, the last thing any army needs is to have hordes of soldiers standing around pontificating while the enemy blows them up.

# Just a quick point...
I think it's important that it be known that squaddies think with their weapon.
