Well..

If you hit it with a shovel, you'd just kill the bird. Unless you cracked it one on the arse first, to disturb the bird, then clattered it one across its face. I've thought about this method too in-depth.

what if

you hit down powerfully with the edge, thus slicing through the bird and inflicting a fatal blow upon the dog?
