IMHOI find the wikipedia entry explains this place to a "T" and goes a lot further than the FAQ (and it's a better read too).

it is a nice articlealthough I can't help feeling that a description of b3ta ends up becoming a definiton of the place and that somehow undermines it

Anyway, the reason I prefer it is that it:
1. Give a good flavour of what goes on here including historical info.
2. Describes how to avoid incurring the wrath of B3tards.
3. Explains the rules.
