I'm afraid that I am most stupid (And slightly drunk) - masking filesize? I just.. I just linked to a pickacher! OH GOD, IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN

Ignore the 'masking' nonsense, I was being a silly paranoid. Nice sketchwork.
Try to keep any linked pics under 50kb though if possible.
Hello new person. Please read our FAQ. Cheers.

If the content is good and it's not *too* obscenely huge

In a test it just took me 5 seconds to optimize that image
down to 50kb with no significant discernible loss of quality

"It's about using optimisation to make your images no larger than they need to be"
That image is probably twice as big as it needs to be, so I decided it warranted a friendly reminder, via the FAQ, to optimize when possible.

I just don't give a shit. Really. "Twice as big as it needs to be" doesn't make me suddenly step back and give a shit, either.
The "reminder" posts, friendly as they may be, are easily as annoying as an image that could be a little smaller. IT DOESN'T BLOODY MATTER. If it's 500k or something, then let's talk about it.

You're making a mountain out of a fucking molehill, and completely ignoring non broadband users. A page of 25 50k posts is about 1 meg. A page of 25 100kb posts is about 2 meg. That's not an insignificant difference. If Rob or whoever deems that now is the time to move on as more people have broadband then that's fine, and the FAQ can be updated (that's not exactly difficult). Until such a time it's only fair to try to keep people within the guidelines.

besides which, if you're going to come to B3ta you should expect long loads exactly the same way you'd expect them with flash cartoon sites.

is that they've not updated the FAQ, not that people are trying to abide by it and encourage abiding by it.

50k isn't a bad guidline. Hell, we've covered why.

There's no reason whatsoever for there actually to be a specific code for general users to trigger
when they feel a user ought be reminded of the guidance of the FAQ....

You're pulling my string!
That gets a woo even if it could be considered frightful commie propaganda against the Fuhrer :o)

b3ta is already painfully slow at some times
and what's so bad about trying to optimize? it's normally about two clicks in ps and a minute on the clock with most pictures.
if the picture is not that easily compressable or if it would suffer from severe quality loss due to compression, that's another matter

effect the strain on it directly? In fact, it follows logically that the longer externally hosted images take to load the less strain there is on the board.

but as it was about twice the guidance size I thought it warranted a friendly little reminder.

Regardless, apologies. We just linked straight from the site, because we are filthy little shits who are too lazy to optimise especially for the b3ta board.
If it helps though, we love you very much, and offer you sticky, sickly treats from our stockings.
