(repeated) fact of the day: the literal translation of the german for platypus is beak animal.

# Schnabeltier
correct. It IS a puzzling animal, that is.

Skyscraper is "Wolkenkratzer" which means "cloud scratcher".

# Wasserstoff
is hydrogen. It's funny that although the Germans are amusing cos they assemble words, our nouns are often exactly the same except in latin/greek. "hydrogen" = water made, submarine = under sea and so on.

# the great
thing about german is that you can just keep making longer and longer words. my flatmate once told me the word for a machine that cleans tramtracks. it took about 4 days.

# Some of the peeps here in the office
loved "Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung" which is speed limit.

Very good tip:
When dealing with multilanguage sites/products/GUIs, use german or french as the first test language, all others will fit nicely.

I had my share trying to fit "zurechtschneiden" on a 100px "crop" button lately.
