Yeah, PNG compresses gradients of colour like a bastard.

PNG does variable (8-bit) transparency and up to 24-bit colour,
GIF does on/off (one-bit) transparency and 8-bit colour, and can do animations.
For the default settings of each format, a GIF will be smaller; however, for larger images a PNG will compress the information of a static GIF better.

you can also save as 8-bit PNG though
works just like a GIF (on/off transparency too) except it doesn't do animation, and it's almost always smaller than the corresponding GIF, apart from with really tiny icon-sized images
