I think you can still get older versions for free from the website. The first one I used was a freebee from one of those PC mags (PC Pro I think).

PSP seems to do everything you need except animation.

still one of the simplest and most effective Gif animation packages about. Not sure why they ditched it for the later versions. But you can still buy it seperately from the Corel website.
