Some people play without picks, but they're... odd.

And as ghosty says, an unplugged electric guitar is just an unplugged electric guitar.

An acoustic guitar is a bit different.

EDIT: Hmm, apparently you don't always get the bearded chap when you load the Martin site. It seems you need to look a little strange to play a Martin though...

Depends on the sound the the style you're using.

Especially if you're doing a particularly complex five fingered arpeggio.
