In my own case it was for rather different reasons, and it's something which I don't really regret - it was kind of a way of punishing myself for mistakes or errors in judgement which resulted in harm either physically or mentally to others as a direct result of my actions.
Agreed, though, people who do it for attention are totally laughable...

it doesnt seem to any real benefit to those you harmed, so basically it's just a selfish action to appease yourself.

# A result of self hate
Self hate and loathing led to my self harming. I did it to find a way to feel something other than numb. The joys of psychotherapy and rebirth followed and no more self harm ever since. Some times it is serious.
