.yeah i did a version with scanlines, and it did nothing for the filesize. My desktop is filled with versions of this GIF, after trying just about everything to get it down from the original 1.1mb. This si the smallest i could get it without mounting it on a pinhead.

I can see you have triedScanlining should do the trick from here I'd say.
If you do it right it will always bring the size down.
I know what you mean though optimisation is a bitch.
