# 1 divided by 3 is 0.3333 recurring
3 x 0.33333 recurring is 9.999999 recurring

Maths is wrong, why does nobody care?

# 0.9999 recurring is another way of saying '1'
;P

# no it isn't
1 is 1, 0.9999999etc is almost 1

# 0.9999999etc is almost one...
0.99999 recurring IS one.

The human mind can't deal with infinity. ;P

# but by definition it is not one, it is less than by an infinitely small amount?

# Yes but 9.999999 is not 1
it's far closer to 10

You put a 9, not a 0 in your original post.

# Well, if you will insist on makjing yourself look an absolute twunt
cos after all, when it comes to maths who needs to put the correct numbers in anyway
;)
I expect you'll take it with the same good grace as the whole Primus/See you next Tuesday thing though :P

# I'm changing it to a symbol next week. Don't think about ever using it though. My lawyers see everything ;)

# "infinitely small amount"
doesn't mean anything, really. What you do is say that it's 1-e where e is really small and then let e tend to zero, say by dividing it by 2 repeatedly. Which in the limiting case of infinite divisions gives you 1.

# 0.9999999999999999 recurring ;)

# :)

#
10x0.999 recurring is 9.999 recurring
9.999 recurring - 0.999 recurring is 9
So 0.999 recurring is 1

Entertaining things happen when you introduce infinities.
