George Bernard Shaw was contractually obligated to write and put on a play for a theatre he had fallen out with. He called the play 'CLOSED FOR REFURBISHMENT', which is what appeared on the theatre hoarding. No-one came, and it was cancelled.

but i don't think it's true. he did write a play and he desperatly wanted to call it closed for refurbishment, people bought tickets turned up, saw it said colsed for refurbishment and went home again, he was disapointed that people didn't get the joke and changed the title a few days later.
