The Red Thing is the EYE of SauronYou see Isildur, son of the king, uses Anduril to cut the ring from Sauron's hand. Sauron has the above armoured appearence. The spirit of Sauron endured, however, because the ring was not destroyed, they're life forces are bound together. The eye of Sauron is the form he takes after his destruction, and is the symbol seen atop the tower of Barud Dur, I think it's Barud Dur.
