# I can't help but be sad by this news
Ethiopia isn't the richest of countries yet somebody thought it a good idea to rip it off on a big scale.

# To be honest,
if you are too dim to weigh your gold then you are asking for trouble.

# Ethiopia is actually quite a wealthy
country in terms of national product and the aid it has received. It is certainly capable of maintaining it's own food source to look after the famine hit areas. It just so happens that the regimes there have continually salted away both the countries wealth and the humanitarian aid to make individuals more wealthy whilst actively sustaining famine in certain areas.

# In other words
It's Africa.
Actually Ethiopia was doing quite well and prospering until a few years ago when drought hit again.

# Diverting the majority of its food aid wealth
( including an annual no strings gift of £30M from the UK ) to fund border wars with Eritrea did not help matters much.

# I am not defending what they do
but your accusation could apply to most countries allocating vast sums of money to "defence".

# I don't actually mind what they do with their own
GDP. I just have a bee in my bonnet about international aid and the fact that some countries treat it in the same manner as chavs here on the dole. It's the 'why work?' syndrome. Take the easy money. You'd think I'd be more tolerant of charity being as her indoors is heavily involved. Still. You know me ;)

# It is very sad
Unfortunately, in that part of the world, corruption is rife and they will do anything, regardless of the cost in human lives, to make a quick profit.
