At the end of 1997I bought 2 5.2GB drives which were, IIRC, the largest commercial drives available at the time. They cost me £255 each as part of a self build that came to £1200 for the whole PC plus OS. ( I asked PC world, for a lark, what they would charge me to build the same machine and they quoted me just under £3k ).
I built a dual core machine for my Dad this year for well under £300.
