If I were to write them though, the anti-hero wouldn't just be a shit two dimensional plot device and would actually challenge the Doctor rather than just being story filler between him defeating and then putting another incident behind him.

I can't say as I recall, tho I do remember they looked almost completely different everytime they appeared...
I like the new look, but I hate the new helmets, they look just a bit too 'silly '70s alien', like the Smash robots.
