# I think they do a free trial version
you have to fly around the Earth backwards in a lear jet though to make it last as long as I have.
As far as totally free goes there may be cut down versions of products that get bundled with video cards etc. You could probably pic on of those up.
I'm loathed to mention the old 5-click discount as b3ta's not that kind of place really but i have heard of people downloading illegal software on some less reputable file sharing programs.

# the cheapest, cheapest way
is to use a movie2Gif converter you can get for free from here www.afterdawn.com.
However you have to have the movie in the the first place, you can't point it at a DVD and say "go".
Also there would be no sound.
Alternatviyl you may be able to get away with QuicktimePro (i havn't used it but apparently it video editing stuff).

I'm currently trying to teach myself premiere....

# I tried Premiere
I used it a year ago actually to make a nice video called Grab My Shaft. I should probably upload that again. A similar thing It was a song I really liked and I used stop motion animation footage off the net.
Premiere won't load for me though, crashes when loading filters etc. That's why i used Vegas really and i'm so pleased I did because Domo Darko would have been VERY different in premiere. I haven't figured it out yet you see.

I'll upload Grab My Shaft for y'all.
