can I get some pointers on this
aside from the dodgy line round the bottom of the image, how can I blend in the front.
pasting over the wheel was fine, but then trying to sort the transition round the front of the car has me stumped

try
just going over the edge of the side layer with a soft eraser with ~50% opacity until it looks right.

If you use a darker background for the floor, the seams won't show as much
So you'd better add a shadow layer behind the car.
It'll blend better *and* look more realistic :)

Gaussian Blur is your friend...
Come to think of it so is motion blur and opacity of your shadow
