I was thinking about doing a sketch to begin with
the blue hatted/haired guy literally started with a single pixel, with no objective. So maybe thats a starting point :)
That, and trying to find a pixel friendly alternative to mspaint. just something with a grid and an easier to use colour pallet would be a godsend.

I was using PS CS4at the higher zoom levels, there is a grid, and the pallette is great.
