# I know Pakis
who quite happily refer to themselves as Pakis. I've never understood how the word in and of itself can be offensive. It's the same as any other word. When used in conjunction with other words in a manner which is intended to offend and show discrimination then anyone has a right to take issue with that if they are the subject of it.
Words are just words. They are part of the English language and the weak-wristed liberal left must not be allowed to attempt to shame us into having to watch every word we say. There is nothing offensive about a word, just the possibility that it may be used to cause offence.
If people are not able to distinguish between offensive comments and common comment then they should not be the ones complaining about language.

# Speaking as a weak-wristed liberal...
nobody's forcing you not use derogatory words. You're quite welcome to go around calling every Asian person you see a Paki, and every black person a nigger, and we'll see how far you get.

Yes, I agree, words should just be words. But this is reality, and they aren't. Being an offensive cunt isn't going to solve anything.

# I think you have totally misunderstood me.
I'm the last person who wishes to cause offence to anyone for no reason ( you cunts here don't count ) and both myself and my sister are in mixed marriages just to allay any fears that I'm some kind of right-wing fascist.
I'm merely saying that people get too worked up about words without seeing beyond them into what was actually said. People attach an implication to a sentence often because of a word it contains rather than what the person actually stated.
I'm trying to defend our language, not racist cunts whom I have a particular distaste for, to which my father will testify to from the time he introduced me to a chap in his new pub when I visited. Within 30 minutes the guy was on his arse swallowing teeth and in that time I'd given him numerous warnings that I was not happy with his choice of subject and views upon it.

# You can be a cunt without also being racist

# If you mean me
I can be a cunt all day.
I was trying to agree with your comment about words and context but you'd just rather use that to say what you perceive me to be.

# CUNTS
I prefer to call everyone no matter what colour or creed, a cunt.
I fucking love cunt.
It is a term of affection of the highest order.
I mean who doesnt like to fuck cunt? ( apart from gay men. They like to fuck arseholes, so i guess the greatest term of affection they can give is to call people arseholes).

So to all you Cunts out there, I LOVE YOU ALL!!

# I always think it's funny
when people get offended on behalf of people who aren't actually offended.

# This, in it's entirety.

# "There is nothing offensive about a word, just the possibility that it may be used to cause offence."
exactly. it causes offense and is used to belittle and de-humanise people. way to stand up for the BNP dude.

# First of all
I'm not aware of what Harry said beyond what I've read here and some news clip saying he'd done something wrong so I'm not talking about anything he has said.
I'm talking only within the confines of this discussion and I picked the word Paki because people get offended about it and they should not. It is short for Pakistani and in common use in that community.
I have no idea how a word such as that 'belittles and de-humanises' people and to be honest I'm not aware of many words that would. Even the word term racist is attached to many a word when it is clearly the fact that the people doing the complaining don't understand the meaning of the word.

I'll add this though, if you'd like to accuse me, in person, of being a supporter of the BNP or in some way a believer that any person is inferior to me by reason of their racial heritage I'd gladly knock you the fuck out.

# What's with the violence, man?!

# you can hardly fault me for being offeded
by someone who insults me based upon their misinterpretation of comments I make, especially when I feel I'm being quite clear about my views.

People are people. Some people are not nice people and those are the values by which I discriminate.

# yet you are happy to have asians called pakis?
so i take it you go to work and use the word, cos as you say, its just a word. maybe call the gay bloke a queer too? as for the violence, well, nothing more need be said.

(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 13:56, archived)
# again you choose
to make a claim about my views based solely on what you choose to believe rather than anything I have actually said.
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 13:58, archived)
# i take it you belive this?
"I've never understood how the word in and of itself can be offensive. It's the same as any other word. When used in conjunction with other words in a manner which is intended to offend and show discrimination then anyone has a right to take issue with that if they are the subject of it."

when used ... is intended to offend.

(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 14:01, archived)
# then you are wrong.
Words can be used to create offence. They are not always used so. If they were then conversations such as this could not exist.
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 14:03, archived)
# So using the word "Paki", for example in a question about the use of the word, is offensive regardless of the context?
You're going to have to go on ignore, for being a twat. Bye.

(Just to clarify, I'm fully intending that to be offensive.)

# You were doing so well
until you suggested that any disagreement with your point of view means that the disagreer must be racist.

Leave the name calling to the children and racists.
