Some idiot friend' of mine keeps sending me pictures of Obama saluting Russian crowds and dressed in communist attire and I sincerely would like to point out the differences to him if you can clearly state them. Socialism is part of the political system in lots of countries; there are only a few true communist regimes
"Modern socialism originated in the late 19th-century intellectual and working class political movement that criticized the effects of industrialization and private ownership on society."
I guess in socialism, not all production methods are in the people's hands (more like the state's hands), but just a few that are of social importance (like the mail, television, transportation and the like. It usually co-exists with democracy/capitalism. A communist system usually is the only system (although in modern day Russia, it's not so clear).
