but have you considered giving your portraits slightly more realistic irises? If you have a look at maiden's tutorial on making an eye, just have a look at the part about irises for any 3D-eye making tutorial, and a think it might give your portraits a little extra.
(it's really easy, just some noise added to the iris area, radial blur, and voila, free irises for all)

I always thought my eyes were a bit flat, but I weren't sure how to make them look real.
