
that the word newt was originally ewt and the word adder was actually nadder but people got confused by mishearing "an ewt" and "a nadder" and they both changed over.

Reference for næddre is easy enough to find. Newt is supposed to have begun as efeta, still apparently dialect somewhere (where?), and then gone efeta eveta eueta euta ewt. Baby newts are apparently still called efts (by who?) ... can't find references.
