I do my pastel drawings on sandpaper, 600 grit is best, really holds the colour, and gives you so much texture to play with.

Somehow I don't quite think I could replicate the same effect on a graphics tablet, but I'd like to get one to play with anyway. So much arts, not enough times to do all the mediums.

that was traditional artwork, but you can get quite close to it digitally... Try Corel Painter...
With a bit of know-how you can do it in PS too
