Always worth doing some ground work before going into these situations.
When I was made redundant, I called a free information company to see what my options were. I think it was someone like these people: www.communitylegaladvice.org.uk/
Get what you can out of them. If you've been there a fair few years, then you should qualify for a fairly tidy amount, depending on your salary.
