I flew to HK recently, and the pilot said nothing at all.It was a bit disconcerting to suddenly land, with hardly any warning, even if it was quite smooth.

People usually clap on the planes you are on?What airline do you fly?
I'd be terrified if people started clapping the pilot - that's like clapping a barman for pouring a decent pint, yes, it's a good talent, but if he can't do it then he shouldn't be doing the job in the first place.

^This. Very much.I've only ever been on one flight where everyone clapped at the end - and I joined in wholeheartedly. The pilot had to make two - TWO! - aborted landings because of high winds.
