and I am not sure if I should watch this in case it ruins everything.

I can highly recommend it - it is just as good as BSG - I have just watched episode 6 and it just seems to get better every week.

helps if you watch the Pilot episode first - it (slowly) rebuilds after that to be a very good series.

And I'm loving Caprica. Give it a go, I'd say. It's faithful to the universe without seeming to be some sort of BSG cash-in. Remember, episode 1 is exactly the same as the pilot from last year except with the boobies edited out, so go with last year's.
