Driving to Mongolia in a shit car again

Crack House Ceilidh Band is driving from London to Mongolia in a Renault Clio. Again. There's a big launch in London for similarly-minded folk. It's for charity - Mind, to be precise, for she is a mentalist. Support it and feel righteous.

The official launch will be during a big Nadaam festival in London (a.k.a. the manly games - expect Mongolian wrestling, archery and really nice food). Avoid the fermented mare's milk if you have a weak constitution.

EDIT: There's a good chance I'll be hitch-hiking to Mongolia. Really. I'll need even more support in that case.

DOUBLE EDIT: due to circumstances beyond my control (off on sick leave/not speaking to co-driver/car getting scrapped) I'm not going this year. The launch'll still be good though and I'll probably marshal that instead, so if anyone fancies some noodles, come along.

(Do you want to drive to Mongolia yourself? It's non-profit and completely for charity. There's still time and places available. See www.mongoliarally.com/.)

I had a clio

Don't be surprised if your engine happens to melt. They have one of the most poorly designed cooling systems ever.

I fear this is indeed true

It's already got some kind of coolant leak. It's not going to pass the MOT next week. The exhaust is about to fall off, there's a hole in the floor and it belonged to my mum for the past 12 years which means little to no maintenance.

On the up side, it has a nice 1.9l diesel engine and if it makes it to London I'm going to try running it on vegetable oil.

Mine had the same engine.

If it works it will both fantastic and cheap to run. If not well,

Ooooh...

Can I come to wave you off?

@ Enzyme

yes please.

or

take a couple of months off work and help drive (this only works if you can indeed drive). Puns are encouraged to pass the time on the autobahns.

y'know...

... that's really rather tempting.

it is lifechangingly amazing

just call it 'research leave'. My department have been hugely supportive, even though I come back with an entirely new perspective on my existence (usually involving not placing much emphasis on work when you lived life on completely different terms for an all-too-tiny while).

...

Most of our postgrads work according to funny schedules - they don't start until next week - but I'll know what's possible in the next few days when I've approved the calendar. (Oh, the power!)

Did I mention that I'm a cannibal, by the way?

no

but I've come to expect that kind of thing from people I meet on teh Interweb. It's what all the scaremongerers warn us about. Also, it makes for a more interesting diet than several months of noodles.

Oh, the catch is that you have to raise quite a lot of money for charity. The other catch is my driving (like a granny).

This sounds rather wow...

I might have to look into coming down for this!

it's

going to be awesome. As mentioned above, I'll be the one in the shit Renault Clio but only if it passes the MOT in a couple of weeks and that's currently doubtful. I think I'm the only Renault Clio going. One of my team mates is taking a 2CV and we're convoying with a Lada Niva.

I can wave

So I shall come and wave you off.

Take tabasco!

A hell of a lot of Mongolian food is pretty boring!

That Nick Hever from "The Apprentice", is partaking of this rally, in a 20 year old Renault?
