He looks like he was a real laugh back in the day
His attempt to scrub this really tells us something about his fundamentalism and carefully crafted status. His image of purity must be so unsullied that he he can't even risk having a redemption or born again story. Many of the guys who follow him and even those that head off to the mid east looking to play soldier have troubled backgrounds. Booze, drugs, hookers, unemployment, crime, broken families. To recognize that in himself would be to lower his status to that of a contemporary.

Hmm, no. He looks like someone desperately trying, and failing, to be one of the lads. The photos were surely taken by someone in the same hall of res for the benefit of later mockery (they really could have had no idea about how funny the medicine school dropout to law student would turn out). As for the rest of what you say, a chequered past is no obstacle to his cause. QED.
