I watched the first episode of the first season recently, it was about 90 minutes, and I was totally "meh".

Obviously it's been in the news and everything
but my ears recently 'pricked up' when it was reported in the serious newspaper I read that two British female porn stars were joining the cast

Ha! Well there is apparently a fair amount of nudity and bonking as well violence and gore, not all that much of the former in the first episode, but in and of itself, sex and violence does not a good drama make. But I heard Sigur Ros appeared and did a musical number and Lilly Allen's brother is in it so could be right up your street!

Should I be familiar with the name Sigur Ros?
Is he one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical prodigy's?
Does he get to wear tights?

Icelandic folky rock type band. Very popular around these parts I think.

The show's a slow burner
I always tell people to read the books before watching/instead of the show. For a start they're much more in depth about a lot of things the show skips over for time purposes, and they're also a lot better paced - pretty much every chapter ends with a sting that'll make you press on to the next

Yeah, I know not liking it is a bit of an unpopular view, but I felt that if a 90 minute pilot left me really not caring enough to watch episode two, it was not for me.

Firstly they don't end and secondly we had to wait 10 years for the 4th book
I have no idea what all the bollocking fuss is about, its like the fantasy genre didn't exist for anyone before this shitty TV fucking series. Go and read the Wheel of Time, at least the author of that had the good sense to die, so that someone else could finish off his shitty books.
tl/dr - I liked this before it was cool and now I hate it

Didn't exist? I don't like the genre but I have heard of J R R Tolkien.
Edit: oh, I really should make sure I read all the words in a comment before replying. Soz.

Reading the books first means you'll watch the series but be unable to enjoy it as you'll be mentally cataloguing ask the differences,
and forgetting where in the story you're supposed to be. Series 1 was great, for me, but I read the books whilst watching Series 2 (made it a bit confusing), and now I can't really be bothered to watch Series 3.
