is no different to having them on your hard drive then connecting to the internet. If anything, I would have thought the cloud is safer than your average persons laptop.

your data can be accessed from anywhere. The most secure would be no on-line copies at all unless encrypted and the key resides with you, or in your head, with 2 factor and all that jazz.
