Probably the combination of being relatively articulate, having great recall, non-remorseful of his crimes (apart from that one), physically imposing, good at what he done, the associated *glamour* of Mafia involvement and Michael Shannon played him in an average film.

There are more interesting criminals though- Issei Sagawa or "nevada girl" comes to mind.
Most serial killers are neither as quirky nor intelligent as pop culture would like them to be though.
