The effects budget wasn't very good
so it drops to low-poly mode when they think people aren't looking.

But you make a good point about Hollywood expectations of space travel there, I think. Invariably, real life isn't half as flashy as the cinematic expectation. I think that's why I loved the effects work on Interstellar so much - it didn't look Gravity flashy, just real.
