
because half of humanity were forced to look at it on our Windows desktops. No merit to the photograph whatsoever. It was only used because it doesn't contain anything.

It was chosen out of countless photographs the billions of people on earth make everyday to be the very face of the most widely distributed operating system at a time in technological history when the personal computer became a standard household item in almost every home in the developed and developing world.
How is that no merit to the photograph?
It contains a rolling hill, a blue sky and clouds. They are the subject of the photograph.
