a cabal of senators and congress critters were meeting and planning on how to "make him a one term president"

from day one? Now I've heard it all. Because every president usually has a unilateral mandate and is universally adored adored, no?

the "minority party" can block things from passing and it is difficult to get through that block. During Bush 2's first term there was actual cooperation between the parties, even after he blew everything up! Not saying it was the best congress ever, but laws did get passed. Many fewer have gotten passed during Obama's time - but most of the bills that were presented to him were junk bills anyway.
However, I am not going to argue much about this - at the federal level it is crazy, but at the state house level it is damn near insane!

The challenge any president faces is much the same; some get things done despite opposition, some don't.
