A mate of mine
lived in Japan for a year (he was a language student), which could sometimes be difficult as he was quite squeamish about food.
He was reassured that the host family he stayed with would probably expect this and wouldn't expect him to eat anything too challenging.
First night there: Spider Crab for dinner (served like this): https://shizuokagourmet.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/suwagani-2.jpg

A friend of mine worked in Hong Kong.
Told me a story about a colleague who was also out there who was really depressed and homesick.
So she decides to get herself a little dog for company.
She's looking round the pet shop making cute faces at the dogs, you know the kind of thing. For some reason the shop owner is giving her and odd look.
Then she spots the dog she wants and falls in love with it straight away.
Points it out to the owner who takes it out of it's cage and out the back.
Short while later the owner presents her with a plastic bag full of meat.
On the plane home to the UK same day.
