This is a normal post Not necessarily stupid
Most hard drives these days can withstand 300G-force shocks when turned off, so they should all work, except maybe the one at the end which fell off.

This is a normal post they didn't
Maxtor produced a run of appallingly bad 40gb hard drives.
these are most likley failed ones.
I used to work for a computer manufacturer (a f years ago) the fail rate on the 40gb hard drives we had in our machines was close to 90%.
we would even change hard dives out that we had already changed out.

most of them you could get going again, wiht maxtors low level format software, bt they would fail again in a few months.

the company refuses to use maxtor (or seagate) drives now.

This is a normal post likewise
we've also had similar problems. a real PITA. segate and western digital seem ok to me. i've not had problems with scsi disks. generally they're built better, perhaps thats the enterprise tax.
