...and that was the sound of an article going over my head. I felt like there was a big gap in the story....Do we not get a decent explanation of how is theory works? Or at least a summary fit for a lamen.

Took me too long to work out what lamen meant.
You could research everything using Google, but the reality is 'Very complex - check the pretty image out though!' will have to suffice.

[very interesting...
..most of the elements involved, E8 groups, Lie Algebra, etc...I've never heard of before.
Gives hope to me that we have enough access to info now that those of us who haven't chosen the academic career path might still be able to "have a go".
But the use Lie Algebra, might be a clue as to his his conjecture's truth value /jk ;?)
