The Riot of Spring
Nice animated score for a piece of complex music, so outlandish at the time, there was a near riot at the first performance - on this day in 1913.
Now it sounds rather like a film score.
Also: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcZ7lfdhVQw
- a drama-doc on the development and riot themselves.

nice one
love this.
can't imagine a performance today being so out there that it had a similar effect.
(the docu link is a bit mangled though, but usable)

When Sonic Youth performed their 'Goodbye 20th Century' album, instead of the usual noisy rock their fans were hoping for,
the atmosphere was similarly testy.

The LA riots of 1992 were directly attributable to a Maroon 5 concert
All the more remarkable since the band weren't to be formed for another 9 years. That's how riot-inducing they are.

wow
i can totally see why that caused such a reaction at the time, parts of it sound like an orchestra having a nervous breakdown.
Weird how its impossible to hear it now without imagining corresponding movie scenes, in fact it sounds like a lot of bits have been cribbed over the years by movie composers.

Totally cribbed by John Williams for Star Wars!
The start of part two (about 15 mins in), compared with the Dune Sea from Star Wars. You can blend them seamlessly.

It wasn't so much the music that caused the consternation
It was Najinsky's choreography, which culminated in him, dressed as a Satyr, humping the cast-off dress of a nymph in the grand finale.

Wasn't that Debussy's L'apres-midi d'un faune?
I've seen the Rite of Sproing as ballet so could be wrong

Curse my faulty memory of avant-garde ballet, you're right.
