Reading what other guitarists had to say about him is really amazing. McLaughlin said if he knew what he was playing, he'd steal it. Zappa thought he was no match for his inventiveness. I think I saw him live in the 70's with Jean Luc Ponte.

I was in the front row and I swear to god after about 20 minutes of improv he leaned out from behind the pillar (where he spent the whole set hiding), and whispered "what song are we playing?"
