This is a normal post I think the argument is it's not worth the effort if it's not changing the world
Charidee appeals are pointless sticking plasters without global political reform. Although it's rather more difficult to get the celebs on board for that

This is a normal post Don't you start to change the world by helping one person at a time?

This is a normal post Thoughts don't save lives, actions do.
It may not be a long term solution, but in the short term, while to you're having your think, I think those helped are pretty happy about it.

that this would come under the heading of 'sovereignty'. As in deciding tariffs with the rest of the world. Not discriminating against non-EU members by use of tariff barriers.
I'm pro-EU but I'm also free trade. You're just being a dick.

This is a normal post What utter bollocks.
There's loads of charitable foundations that do real good here and abroad.
Are you arguing we should close them down in the hope governments might start giving a shit in some utopian new world order?

Thought that with the Tom Hardy example, he went to Yemen? The best thing we could all do to help Yemen is to put pressure on our Government to put pressure on SA. Ok it isn't a black&white situation but more could be done...but getting Tom Hardy with a placard outside Westminster asking all his fans to write to their MP doesn't bring in the cash I guess.

This is a normal post With Yemen a lot can be achieved by the world stopping selling arms to either side and getting SA and Iran to talk rather than fight their proxy wars.
But that's not going to happen any time soon and the likely hood of all out war is getting much greater.

As for governmental pressure from SA, from what i've heard with interviews of diplomats is public pressure is counter productive.

I would hope there is some pressure in private but being private I have no assurances there.

So your saying Tom should be outside BAE with his placard?

This is a normal post It's a free country.
But in specifically the situation in Yemen it's not going to help unless Mohammad bin Salman is a big fan of his.

Where it would help is if there was a situation where the public giving a shit mattered. Iran and SA are not going to stop their fighting because some westerners are concerned about it and the cold hard fact is the UK government have only a few leavers to pull and they must be pulled in private in order to have a positive effect.

We are all agreed then? Tom Hardy is going to stand outside BAE until the UK stops selling offensive armaments to SA. He will be the bane of the arms industry!

Ah I see, you just object to supporting overseas charities then?

Sure you wouldn't decline the help from the likes of Shelter, Cancer Research, RNIB etc if you found yourself in a position to need it.

This is a normal post So make the NGO's GO's?
Make charity workers currently working for free or reduced pay state employees? Currently thats 853,000 people.
That's going to be very expensive to do isn't it?

Also it's going to make them political. MSF is already a target when doing their work. Is making them an arm of the state going to help that?

If it were me I would continue to fund these causes via massive tax relief and government funding.

Anyway, whatever makes you feel good when sneering at others helping others.

Thought the number was large enough to point out it couldn't be nationalised without muddling things with workers that work for free a few times a year or month.
