I expect that it’s bloody hard to get the licenses required to conduct trials

Given that recreational weed use is now legal to use in about a dozen states I don't think it would be hard at all in the USA to conduct such trials.
We've been cultivating opium poppies in the the UK for medical purposes for over a decade. I think the various exemptions and licenses wouldn't be hard to come by. There certainly seems to be little will to pick it up and run with it though, and I don't think this is because of politics. Politics didn't hold back opiates in the USA. I think cannabis' curative properties are probably being massively overstated by stoners, and people in cases like this with anecdotal evidence.

They can't patent it.
Ironically, more people have died of acute symptoms whilst testing the alternative formulations.
Also, 60+ years of propaganda.
