What with the referendum being in the Tory manifesto for the 2015 general election,
and it then being called by the Tory government one can see how you could come to the conclusion that it is a Tory idea.

Perhaps, but it doesn't change the fact that Brexit was a Tory project through and through. Isolationism is a typically conservative policy, plus, all things being equal, can you really see Labour coming up with it in isolation?*
