he could pull off stunts like that when he was 8, and hadn't realised his mass had octupled and his reflexes diminished since then.

My dad is in his 70s and does similarly insane looking Dibnah-esque things with ladders, but he uses rope and has someone brace and steady them when he goes up, because he's not a total numpty.

Friction is proportional to normal force, so increased mass wouldn't affect the precariousness of the situation. His mass being higher relative to the ladder might increase the effect of any wobbling which is not insignificant when you're that close to the slip point I suppose.

and the ladder is juuuust balanced against barely nothing before he gets on it.

To me, normal is 90 degrees to the left of prograde (assuming the blue side is up). Kerbals have ruined my brain.

is nowhere near as bad. It is propped against a wall and chocked up against a bannister rail, it's going nowhere and the more weight you have on it, the more solid it will be.

The funniest bit of that image is the guy lightly holding on to one side of the ladder, thinking he is doing anything at all.
