This is a normal post As a D&D player for many years, I've often wondered about what it is these fantasy people are supposed to represent.
There was a game setting from the 1990s, set on a fantasy version of Earth, where they'd decided that "humans" came from Europe, and that all the other parts of the world were populated by fantasy people - as if only Europeans were really people, and everyone else in the world was some non-human species.
They had all the elves in North America, with a generic Native American styling; all the orcs in Africa, with a generic bone-through-the-nose "savage" styling...
It's an extreme example, but I'm glad no-one in games publishing seems to think that's ok now.

I'm not sure what we can do about dwarfs, though.

Shire is England.
Elves are Europe
Dwarves are...scots, maybe?
Mordor is the Middle-East.
Grey Havens are America, weirdly.

And the less said about Rhun and Harad the better.

This is a normal post I've got a detailed atlas that does that - you've misplaced some of those places a little
The Shire covers pretty much the whole UK, but Hobbiton is absolutely Oxford (he specified that in one of his letters, apparently).
Mordor is around Romania, Gondor is Italy / Southern France.
The Grey Havens are around West Ireland or so.
The dwarves are absolutely Jews. They've lost their homeland, they're wandering the lands, they have their own secret language and customs... He explicitly states that in one of his letters.

By the 70s, he was writing that he regretted some of the racial overtones of his work.

This is a normal post I really waving my nerd credentials about the place now, but
Rohan may well be portrayed as Saxons in all the adaptations, but the Prof never intended that. In the Appendix "On Translation" in LotR, he says that he used Anglo-Saxon styles and language for the Rohirrim to create a sense of connection to the modern English-speaking hobbits, and he specifically said that he didn't mean for this to imply that they were connected to the real Saxons.

Not quite but the Spanish version is well worth a look though not for kids unless you want to explain why the man is pretending to be a dog while being whipped
