I understand the desire to step away from ruling by birthright, but I genuinely struggle to identify a system that works any better than ours.

Our defacto head of state is the Speaker of the House of Commons. He welcomes foreign dignitaries and is the authority figure who even the Prime Minister must obey. I propose we formalise the office as head of state, keeping the way Speakers are elected and not extending their powers in any way.
We can keep the royal family, but strip them of all their political and military powers so the monarch would no longer be our head of state. We would also abolish the civil list. All members of the royal family would become citizens of the republic. There would be no more royal subjects.
Military and political oaths will be made to the people.
The state religion is a bit tricky, as it makes no sense to have the Speaker as the head of the church. That said. it never made sense for the head of state to be the head of the church either.
