
Those waveforms get their names from the shapes they make on cartesian plots. A square wave on a polar plot isn't square.

A square wave on a polar plot would look a bit like a gear with odd-shaped teeth.
The one on the right isn’t really a square wave either. Square waves go from positive straight to negative; they don’t linger on zero like that one.
