There was never a hill.
MMA started as a way for two men to beat the crap out of each other with as few holds barred as possible. I've seen a fair few bouts and they all seemed to end up with one guy holding another on the ground and trying to use a free hand to hit them in the head until it was all over. It was boring, frankly.
I have no love for pugilism either - I think it's barely a step up from cock fighting - but UFC just takes all the crass aspects of boxing, turns them up to eleven, and leaves out anything that resembles sportsmanship or artistry.
